Um dia de cada vez, um dia de cada vez, um dia de cada vez...
"If we can no longer speak of “us”, there will be no such thing as a peaceful Middle East anymore. It is only then that we realize that we need each other, but also how much the world needs “us” as citizens of the Middle East. It is our collective responsibility as Arabs, Iranians, Turks and Jews to prove to the rest of the world that this perception is a correct one. Yet it seems to me that despite the appearance of friendly exchanges and dialogues, people in the Middle East do not listen to each other. They are either in a position of subordination and inferiority or in a position of rejection and superiority. It should be immediately obvious that both of these models are unworkable in the long run. Middle East is too complicated a place to allow clichés and reductive formulas to rule us. And this is where the role of intellectuals in the Middle East as critical Aufklarers and bridge makers must play its just role. It is this role of understanding reality, exposing lies and holding the truth that will enable us in the Middle East to ask correct questions about our own identities and about our relationship to the others. These are question not be asked only by intellectuals but are the responsibility of every citizen of the Middle East. Yet there are times that public intellectuals in the Middle East more than private citizens need to be servants of ideas and to speak the truth beyond their private and personal interests. Today in the Middle East intellectuals have a vocation of representing the cause of freedom, justice and peace. That vocation is important to the extent that it is publicly recognizable and involves both commitment and boldness."
