Reparo como esta associação é profissional, directa e promotora de atitudes cívicas, reparo como a internet é um meio que potencia a adesão a causas, universalizando-as ao segundo, reparo como o poder na América é tratado com a consideração mas também com a exigência e com o trato directo que merece.
Nesta carta o senador americano Bill Frist pede-nos que nos juntemos a ele e telefonemos para o número da Casa Branca, referenciado a negrito, declarando ao Presidente Bush que está na hora de ele passar ao plano "B" de uma acção sobre o governo do Sudão. Plano que passaria pelo: 1. reforço de sanções mais duras contra o Sudão (eu por acaso tenho sempre dúvidas neste tipo de medidas porque acabam por prejudicar mais os povos que os governos, mas enfim, restrições duras em certas áreas não alimentares ou circulação de medicamentos serão defendidas por mim); 2. Fazer uma parceria com as Nações Unidas para obrigar à existência de um espaço aéreo de circulação proibida sobre Darfur a fim de evitar os continuados bombardeamentos sobre a população (parece-me bem, pese embora seja uma obrigatoriedade que implique uma ameaça e demonstração de força da comunidade internacional e não sei como será feita sem ingerência); 3. Pressionar as Nações Unidas para rapidamente instaurar forças de Manutenção da Paz para protegerem os civis (e para realizar esta actividade, esta assistência, é preciso que o governo do Sudão e as forças em confronto dêem autorização. Há pois uma diferença entre assistência e o recurso a uma intervenção humanitária. Esta não é uma figura do direito internacional que registe um acordo unânime entre os especialistas, pois há quem a considere ilegítima por muitas vezes prolongar os conflitos armados. Veja-se o caso da Libéria e da intervenção humanitária dos EUA, por exemplo.). Eu sobre esta questão não tenho opinião formada. Por princípio sou a favor desta figura de intervenção, mas reconheço que na prática pode servir como forma de atear ainda mais a violência. Não sei. Melhor seria uma força de manutenção da paz, claro, com o acordo das partes. Mas parece tudo tão lento...

The U.S. and the international community are all that stand between millions of civilians in Darfur and the Sudanese regime's policy of genocide. Hundreds of thousands have already been killed, and time is running out for millions more.
